“Fun” Fact: All proceeds from sales in our gift shop go towards supporting the operations of our visitor center! What does that mean? It means all revenue on anything we sell not only makes it possible for us to continue to be open and offer free admission to all, it also allows us to hold free events, host local field trips, provide educational resources and information, and be an asset to our community by drawing in visitors from across the globe.
Another “Fun” Fact: We don’t just sell souvenirs! Our gift shop has a wide array of items for sale, beyond the traditional souvenirs of magnets, postcards, mugs, and shirts. We also carry items that will appeal to all your loved-ones this holiday season, from candles made by Milkhouse Candle Company, a small business founded and based out of Osage, Iowa, to locally-made crafts and art.

One final note - For credit card transaction processing, we use VizyPay, a company based out of Des Moines. Because of this, all sales in our gift shop have a 4% service charge. However, when using only cash to make a purchase, this service charge is waived. All prices marked on items in our gift shop are cash-only prices. Because of this, we recommend making purchases with cash if possible, as it will save you money!
While some people may be apprehensive about this service charge, we think it’s worth also noting that since our center is operated by Wapello County and owned by the City of Eldon, we are a government entity and thus do not have to charge sales tax (which is currently 7% in Wapello County, meaning the service charge is still less than the sales tax you would be charged at other businesses in Wapello County).
